Styling a Dessert Table That Photographs Beautifully Table Styling with Garlands: Small Touches That Elevate a Setting

When most people think of garlands, they picture a swag of greenery above a doorway or a paper chain across a mantel. But some of the most effective garland styling happens at table level. A garland running down the center of a table adds color and texture without blocking conversation, and it can be adapted to any theme, from a rustic dinner to a bright children's party.

The key to table garlands is scale. A garland that's too bulky will overwhelm the table and leave no room for plates. A garland that's too thin will disappear against the tablecloth. As a general rule, the garland should take up about a third of the table's width, leaving plenty of space on either side for place settings. If you're using a runner, the garland can sit on top of it or replace it entirely.

Choosing Materials for a Table Garland

Fresh greenery is the classic choice, but it requires care. Eucalyptus, olive branches, and ruscus are long-lasting and won't shed as much as pine or cedar. Soak the stems in water overnight before arranging, and mist them lightly throughout the event. If you're using fresh greenery, avoid placing it directly on a bare wood table, since moisture can leave marks. A fabric runner underneath protects the surface.

Paper and fabric garlands are more forgiving and can be made well in advance. A simple paper chain in two or three colors looks cheerful and child-friendly. A fabric bunting draped loosely along the center of the table adds a soft, homemade feel. For a more elegant look, consider a garland of paper flowers or folded paper leaves in muted tones.

Dried elements are having a moment, and they work beautifully on tables. Dried orange slices, pampas grass, and preserved eucalyptus add texture without requiring water. They can be arranged loosely or woven into a base garland of twine or ribbon. Dried elements are lightweight and can be stored and reused, making them a practical choice for hosts who entertain often.

Arranging and Finishing the Look

Start by laying the garland loosely down the center of the table. Don't try to make it perfectly straight. A gentle curve or a few small loops look more natural and allow the garland to adapt to the shape of the table. If the garland is long, let the ends drape slightly over the edge, but make sure they don't hang low enough to be pulled by guests or pets.

Once the main garland is in place, tuck in small accents. Votive candles, small bud vases, or a few scattered blooms can break up the line and add interest. Keep the height low so guests can see each other across the table. If you're using candles, choose unscented ones so they don't compete with the food.

Lighting makes a difference. A string of fairy lights woven through the garland adds a warm glow that photographs beautifully, especially in the evening. Battery-operated lights are safest for table use and don't require a nearby outlet. Just make sure the battery pack is hidden under the garland or tucked into a small box.

Finally, consider how the garland will look from different angles. Guests will see it from their seats, from across the room, and in photos. Walk around the table and check the arrangement from each side. A few small adjustments can make the difference between a garland that looks placed and one that looks styled.
