Table Styling with Garlands: Small Touches That Elevate a Setting Crepe Paper Streamers: Cheap, Cheerful, and Surprisingly Versatile

Crepe paper streamers have a reputation problem. They're associated with school gymnasiums and last-minute birthday parties, the kind of decor you toss in the trash the next morning. But give them a second look and you'll find one of the most flexible, budget-friendly materials in the party aisle. They twist, fringe, layer, and drape in ways that more expensive decorations can't, and a single roll costs less than a coffee.

The trick is to stop thinking of streamers as something you hang in a straight line. Instead, treat them as a raw material. Twisted streamers create a rope-like texture that works beautifully for garlands. Fringed streamers mimic the look of tissue paper tassels at a fraction of the effort. Layered streamers in two or three colors add depth to a plain wall without any special tools.

Three Techniques Worth Learning

The first technique is the twist. Cut a length of streamer, tape one end to a table, and twist the other end until the paper coils tightly. Fold the twisted length in half and it will twist around itself into a rope. Secure both ends with tape and you have a durable garland strand. Repeat in alternating colors and hang them side by side for a curtain effect.

The second technique is fringing. Fold a streamer back and forth into a small stack, then cut thin strips along one edge, stopping about an inch from the fold. Unfold the streamer and you have a long piece of fringe that can be draped across a table edge, woven into a balloon garland, or hung vertically as a backdrop. This is the fastest way to add texture to a plain wall.

The third technique is layering. Instead of one streamer, use three or four in different colors and tape them together at one end. Twist them loosely as a group, then hang. The colors will separate and overlap as they twist, creating a striped effect that looks far more complex than it is. This works especially well for photo backdrops, where you want visual interest without a lot of weight.

Styling Ideas That Don't Look Cheap

Streamers look best when they're used with intention. A single twisted strand in a bold color can be elegant if it's hung cleanly and evenly. A dozen strands in clashing colors will look messy no matter how carefully you hang them. Choose a palette of two or three colors and repeat it throughout the space, mixing streamers with other textures like paper fans, fabric, or greenery.

For a children's party, fringed streamers in bright colors make a playful backdrop behind the cake table. For a more grown-up event, twisted streamers in muted tones like dusty blue, sage, and cream can read as sophisticated, especially when paired with simple white balloons. Streamers also work well as table runners, wrapped around chair backs, or woven through a garland of paper flowers.

One practical note: crepe paper tears easily, so handle it gently and avoid hanging streamers in high-traffic areas where guests might brush against them. If you're using streamers outdoors, secure every end with tape or clips, since even a light breeze will send them flying. With a bit of care, a few rolls of crepe paper can carry an entire party's decor for less than the cost of a single bouquet.
